This soaring 90s spectacular hit is no less than iconic. According to reports, All I Want for Christmas Is You has grossed Mariah more than a whopping $88 million (that's over R1.2 billion) to date since its first release in 1994. In 2017, it broke Spotify's global single-day streaming record on December 24, surpassing 10.8 million streams.
Fun fact: This song was written in just 15 minutes when Mariah and songwriter Walter Afanasieff got together to come up with material for the album "Merry Christmas"
That's over $88 million for 15 minutes of work.
"Last Christmas" by Wham
When this all-time favourite song was released in 1984 it reached No. 1 in Denmark, Slovenia and Sweden and No. 2 in eight countries. The group donated all of their royalties to the Ethiopian famine at the time. This song is loved so much that there is a film made based on it which stared Emilia Clarke and Henry Goulding.
"It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas" by Michael Bublé
Michael Bublé's cover of It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas became an instant classic when it was released in 2011. The album Christmas spent five weeks in the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 album sales chart. The original was sung by Bing Crosby.
"Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" by Bruce Springsteen
This classic Bruce Springsteen track was recorded live at C.W. Post College in 1975. Although being an all-time classic, the party anthem is popular for its modern upbeat feel.
"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" by Judy Garland
The legendary 1944 Christmas song was originally sand by Judy Garland in the movie Meet Me in St. Louis. The song became popular among United States troops serving in World War II. Since then, other artists such as Luther Vandross, Christina Perri, John Legend, and of course Michael Bublé have all released their own versions over the years.
"It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" by Andy Williams
Undoubtedly, it is the most wonderful time of the year and Andy hit the nail on everyone's head by singing the most cheerful song that would be played during Christmas for decades. The song was first recorded and released in 1963 for his first Christmas album, The Andy Williams Christmas Album. This festive hit was also covered by Harry Connick Jr. in 2008, amongst other artists.
"Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," by Gene Autry
The song Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is probably one of the most covered school recital favourite classics of all time. It is based on the 1939 story of the same name, with the 1949 version sang by Gene Autry which hit number one on the US charts. In 1968 The Temptations covered the tune, as well as The Jackson 5, and later Destiny's Child.
